History of Rolls Royce Limited

I write this not for all the true experts or to add to the many volumes that have been written, rather for the novice who owns or would like to own and know what the RR stands for.


Rolls-Royce Limited was founded in March1906 (contract signed Dec 1904)by Henry Royce and The Honorable C. S. Rolls. It should be noted both Rolls and Royce were automotive manufactures when they met in May 1904, Rolls died in July 1910. I will not elaborate on the founders rather the automotive manufacturer they were responsible for from this initial signing.
To begin with the basics, until 1954 RR did not manufacture bodies, in fact the first body was the 1953 Bentley Mark VI, as well the Wraith was the last chassis only. Lets begin with chassis design in what is called pre WWII era.
There are three production eras, the beginning with what was called the 10,20,30 hp then the 40/50 Silver Ghost versions 1904-1925, then the middle era of the 40/50, 20/25, 25/30 hp, Phantoms and Wraiths 1925-1952, then the Modern era (not to be confused with Modern Mag.  re1965-) and Bentleys take over in 33 then in 1955 the steel stamped bodies of the S and Clouds began. Bentley was first off the assembly line.
It is hard not to slip into a lengthy Silver Ghost story, to be brief. The Ghost story begins with the introduction
